Frequently Asked Questions

How is a root canal performed?

A root canal treatment consists of the removal of the infected or irritated nerve tissue that lies within the root of the tooth. It is this infected pulp tissue that causes an eventual abscess. The first step in a root canal is to obtain access to the nerve. This is accomplished by a small opening in the top of the tooth. The length of the canal is determined, and the infected pulp is removed. Usually during the same visit the root canal(s) is cleaned and shaped to a form that can be filled The final step in your root canal will be sealing the canal with sterile, plastic material called gutta percha. This is done in order to prevent possible future infection. In order to re-establish normal form and function, and to protect it from future fracture, the tooth will need a core buildup and a crown. Sometimes when there has been long-standing infection, you may need to take an antibiotic. You will be given specific instructions to minimize post-operative discomfort. For pain, analgesics can be prescribed. In either case, be sure to call our office.
