What is the cause of gum disease? Does it hurt? How do I know if I have gum disease?

Gum disease is a bacterial infection that attacks the gums and bone supporting the teeth. In its early stages, gum disease is not apparent to the patient. Just as high blood pressure is a silent disease of the body, periodontal disease is the silent disease of the mouth. Only in it’s advanced stages do you start seeing obvious signs.
