The old axiom that says, “ An ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure” is never more true than it is in dentistry. A good daily oral hygiene routine combined with regular dental exams and professional hygiene care can save you much in time and money spent on restorative care. We take your periodontal care seriously, because in the battle for good oral health, you are either on the offensive, or you are losing ground to harmful bacteria that destroy your teeth and gums. We truly believe that prevention is the cornerstone to the building of long-term dental health.

Our Preventive and Hygiene Services include:

  • Diagnostic Examination and Radiography
  • Oral Cancer Screenings
  • Gentle Cleanings
  • Treatment for Gingivitis and Periodontal Disease (Nitrous Oxide available for sedation)
  • Dental Sealants
  • Patient Education and Nutritional Counseling

Restorative cosmetic dentistry encompasses a wide spectrum of treatments, many of which are unique to each patient’s situation. Upon your initial comprehensive examination we will determine if you have a need for any of our specialized services. Many hours of post-graduate training have enabled us to offer these services with confidence and skill.

ORAL CONSCIOUS SEDATION

Many people have postponed dental treatment for numerous reasons anxiety about the procedure, the length of time they are in the dental chair, fear from previous dental experiences "I would have the work done if I could just be put out" has been uttered by many a person.

Oral conscious sedation is the perfect adjunct to our comfort treatment options.  Patients are pre-screened to determine whether or not this type of sedation is a good option for them.  The patient swallows a small pill about 45 minutes to a hour before the procedure.  This, combined with the nitrous oxide administered during the procedure, provides a deep level of sedation without putting the patient to sleep.  Near the end of the procedure, the nitrous is cleared and the patient is released to go home with the driver who brought him.

If the patient prefers a milder form of sedation, nitrous oxide can be used without the oral sedative.  If used in this way the patient is "back to normal" when he leaves the office and can drive himself home.  A pulse oximeter is used throughout the procedure to monitor the patient¹s blood pressure, pulse, and oxygen saturation levels.

Dr. Burnett is certified by the Texas State Dental Board for both forms of sedation.

TMJ Splint Therapy
Some patients come to us experiencing popping or clicking of the temporomandibular joint (TMJ). This is sometimes combined with pain in the jaw, limited opening, and muscle spasms. Often the patient has a history of muscle-tension headaches. Usually these symptoms are directly related to problems with the bite, coupled with teeth grinding and clenching. We help many patients become pain free with the use of a simple acrylic splint that goes in-between the teeth, taking out all the natural tooth interferences, thus allowing the muscles to relax.

Equilibration
There are many reasons why teeth do not meet together properly. Some of them being developmental defects, trauma, malocclusion (poor bite), incomplete orthodontics, bruxism (grinding), extractions followed by teeth shifting, and abnormal wear of various restorations done over the years. The purpose of balancing the bite is simply two-fold: to create an oral environment where the teeth can function in such a way that there is minimal damage to the teeth from the effects of chewing and grinding, and to allow the muscles of the head and neck to become more relaxed, thus decreasing symptoms of TMJ dysfunction (i.e.-tension headaches, neck aches, TMJ joint pain and/or popping, etc.) In essence, there is a definite relationship with the way the teeth come together and health of the temporomandibular joint (TMJ).

Who can benefit from equilibration?

  1. Patients who have successfully gone through TMJ splint therapy; equilibrating enables these patients to not have to be dependant on their splint for long term comfort.
  2. Patients who have a significant bite discrepancy and are getting ready to have extensive crown and bridge work done; this sets up the occlusal foundation for a long-term healthy functioning occlusion.

How safe is the procedure?
Before a full equilibration is done, we always take models of your teeth and mount them together with an exact record of your bite. Dr. Burnett will proceed to balance the bite on the models first; this serves as a blueprint for what he will do on your teeth. The amount of enamel removed is very minimal and is not noticeable when you look at your teeth.

How will my bite feel after it is done?
We have equilibrated many patients, and every patient has described their bite as “being more comfortable”, more solid, like “I’m hitting on all my teeth now”. Some have made comments like “Now I know where to put my teeth to bite. It feels great!”

Night Guard Protection
Due to a stressful fast-paced life that many of us are experiencing, there is a new disease being diagnosed in dentistry. It is called “occlusal disease”- - excessive wearing away of the enamel by nighttime grinding and clenching. Sleep studies have shown that we can grind with much greater intensity in our sleep than when we are awake. Recent studies have also found that certain medications can cause patients to grind in their sleep. Many patients are not even aware of their nocturnal grinding; however, the teeth will show very obvious signs if it has been going on. Obviously, it’s much better to identify the problem as soon as possible so the teeth can be protected from this destructive behavior. If we see the signs of nocturnal grinding and clenching in your mouth, we will recommend that you be fitted with a custom made night guard that will protect your teeth from further excessive wear.

Custom Made Athletic Mouth Guards
For patients involved in physical contact sports, we highly recommend the use of a protective mouth guard. Dental disasters on the court or playing field happen more often than most people are aware, and in most cases the patient was not using a protective guard. Store-bought mouth guards can be more practical for children who do not have their final adult dentition. But for those children and adults who have their final permant teeth, we recommend a well-fitting custom-made mouth guard.. You will find no better form of protection when you are playing contact sports.

Breath Treatment
Chronic bad breath can be very frustrating and embarrassing. Sometimes it may be the result of poor brushing and flossing habits, and sometimes it can stem from more serious situations such as gum disease, hormonal fluctuations, or a general health problem. As a part of your routine hygiene appointment, we offer the Breath RX system which includes a tongue cleanser, cleaning gel, and rinse.
