![]() Equilibration - Balancing of the Bite There are many reasons why teeth do not meet together properly. Some of them being developmental defects, trauma, malocclusion (poor bite), incomplete orthodontics, bruxism (grinding), extractions followed by teeth shifting, and abnormal wear of various restorations done over the years. The purpose of balancing the bite is simply two-fold: to create an oral environment where the teeth can function in such a way that there is minimal damage to the teeth from the effects of chewing and grinding, and to allow the muscles of the head and neck to become more relaxed, thus decreasing symptoms of TMJ dysfunction (i.e.-tension headaches, neck aches, TMJ joint pain and/or popping, etc.) In essence, there is a definite relationship with the way the teeth come together and health of the temporomandibular joint (TMJ).
